Server IP's at server DNS

We have a problem with our new IT systems which is causing our users to experience slow file opening.

We have Server 2012 R2 with Essentials Experience role installed. We also have Office 365 subscription and we have integrated our Essentials server to Windows Azure AD, O365 and Intune which we also have in place. Our Office is ProPlus from O365 E3 subscriptions.

Essentials server 2012 R2 have new feature that automatically connects PC’s to the server via VPN. For this to work, I needed to configure IP pool for VPN clients. The first IP of this pool is the default gateway for VPN connected clients. This VPN GW IP has also been registered to DNS so servername has two IP’s in server’s DNS, one that the IP of the server configured in NIC and one is the VPN GW IP.

Now user PC’s, when they first time try to reach the servername, get the IP of the VPN GW IP to the server and from office network, that IP do not answer (when user is in office network, VPN tunnel is not created because the server and PC is on the same network). After PC DNS records have been populated by the A records of servername, the VPN GW IP is the first IP for the servername.

I am not sure if this is causing the slowness of files to open but it would be nice if PC’s get the correct server IP as first IP for the server. I have tried to place server NIC IP to the DNS for the domain.local zone’s properties (DNS Manager / right-click domain.local zone name / properties / Name Servers tab). At the moment, VPN GW IP is the first IP at the Name Servers tab’s name server lists record (in the record there is the FQDN and IP’s for that FQDN and VPN GW IP is the first IP). From here I have tried to set server NIC IP as the first IP but it does not change it. VPN GW IP is stuck as the first IP.

My questions are, how can I change the server NIC IP to be the default first IP for the server? Is the VPN GW IP as servername IP mandatory to be in the server DNS for connectivity for VPN clients to work? Our previous server was SBS2011 and in that server, VPN IP pool’s first IP was not created to the server DNS.

Also any other comments to the slow file opening or this DNS IP problem is more than welcome!!

Thanks in advance!!
