Unable to connect to Azure VM via the VPN client using the VM's internal IP Address

I have created a Virtual machine with Win2012 & SQL Server 2012.

I have copied over our data onto the SQL Server.

I am able to connect my application to the SQL Server on the VM, through the Internet.

I tried creating a Point-2-Site VPN from my desktop to the Azure Virtual Machine. The Virtual Network with the Point-2-Site option got created, but I am assuming the wrong way sinceI cannot connect to the Azure VM via the VPN, in any way (pinging, Remote Desktop or anything else). So the VPN does not work.

The Virtual Network on the Portal & the VPN client on the Desktop both do not show any traffic, so I am assuming all the traffic is going through the internet & not through the VPN.

Please help.
