Access Azure Active Directory through VPN

I am obviously missing something important here. For years I've been running my small business from a set of servers in the office. The electricity bills are killing me and I thought: if I'm moving the applications to the cloud, why not my datacenter. So I created a Cloud Service, a VPN, and a corporate Domain Controller (along with the DNS setup). I downloaded the VPN installer for a 64 bit machine and, presto, my client machine here in the office is connected to a full-featured corporate network running in the cloud.

So now comes the tricky part.  I want my users and computers in the office to be part of the corporate domain hosted in the cloud (this appears to me to be what Direct Access is all about).  However, simply turning on the VPN connection and joining the domain doesn't work.  The user profiles for the domain user in both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are corrupted and basically unusable.  I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the VPN isn't available when the machine reboots into the new domain.

What am I missing?  Has anyone else tried moving their data center to the cloud?
